Subject:
Let’s build that Bridge!
Message:
I urge you to support the Oregon-led solution to the I-5 bridge replacement project during the February 2014 legislative session.

Growing congestion in this critical corridor threatens freight movement with consequences for our regional jobs and economy. Each year $41 billion worth of commerce crosses the bridge, moving goods up and down the West Coast. This is predicted to increase to $71 billion by 2030. The Columbia River Crossing is the last remaining stop sign on I-5, and it can take hours for traffic to recover from a back-up caused by a bridge lift. This disrupts commerce and degrades quality of life for commuters trying to get home to their families. Additionally, portions of this World War I era bridge are built on wooden pilings in the riverbed that do not extend into sturdier bedrock, resulting in a seismically vulnerable structure.

Investing in a replacement bridge must be our top priority for local, regional and national freight movement. Freight will receive multiple benefits including reduced congestion and decreased travel times, improved safety for motorists, and improved safety and efficiency for marine navigation. These direct benefits to transportation system users in turn will result in economic benefits to the region and state by improving access to job opportunities throughout the region, reducing business costs, and improving access to goods and services both domestically and internationally.

I have appreciated the Legislature's leadership on transportation issues, especially the I-5 Bridge effort, and look forward to continued leadership in the future. It is so important for Oregon's economic success.

Sincerely,
